Roundabouts work in Scotland

I toured Scotland for a couple weeks in July on a family vacation.

Many roundabouts, both big and small ones, are used in urban, suburban and highway scenarios.

Speaking of roundabouts, check back later this week for an update on the Linglestown square project.

Village sports update

* Linglestown's sandlot baseball club grabbed a commanding two games to none lead over the weekend in its best-of-five semifinal series against Lawnton. They won 9-8 Saturday at Koons Park by scoring two runs in the final inning. Sunday's game at Lawnton ended in an 8-8 tie, according to a box score in today's The Patriot-News. (I'm not sure how a playoff game can end in a tie.) The series resumes tonight in Lawnton at 6 pm.

* Fall must be fast approaching based on Linglestown midget football team starting practice sessions tonight at Koons Park.

* Linglestown's all-star midget baseball team continues play tonight against Camp Hill in the Haps Boyer Central Penn Tournament.

Wildlife sightings

* Bear invades backyard near Linglestown. CLICK HERE for map.

* I spotted six deer last night near the pond behind St. Thomas United Church of Christ, which is located east of the village at the intersection of Route 39 and Wenrich Street.

Sandlot team one up in semifinal

Linglestown's sandlot baseball team beat Lawnton 5-3 to take a one-game lead in the best-of-five semifinal series. Brian Zellers banged out a two-run homer in the third inning, and Jim Miller was the winning pitcher.

Lawnton had the best record in the East Shore Twilight league during the regular season. Linglestown qualified for the playoffs in fifth place.

Game two of the series will be played today at Koons Park at 2 pm.

Linglestown baseball heads to semifinal series

Linglestown's sandlot team won last night's rubber game with Valley View to qualify for the East Shore Twilight semifinal series. Below is a report by Eric Epler that appeared in today's Patriot-News:

Linglestown, erupting for five runs in the top of the sixth inning, canned host Valley View 7-4 to win its best-of-3 first-round series 2-1. The big sixth-inning blow came from Alex Hartman, who cleared the bags with a triple. Other catalysts for Linglestown included A.J. Granito (2-for-4), Nate Zellers (2-for-4) and Jason Stovall (2-for-3), each collecting RBIs. Not lost among nine Linglestown hits was game-winner Pete Hayden, who fashioned a complete-game seven-hitter. Linglestown travels to top-seeded Lawnton tomorrow to kickstart the second round.

Linglestown postcard

Pictured is a monument located in the cemetery across from Koons Pool that names the soldiers from Lower Paxton, East Hanover, West Hanover and Susquehanna townships who heroically gave their lives during the Civil War.

The monument was refurbished a few years ago in an effort led by the township governments.

* Linglestown's sandlot baseball team travels to play the rubber game of a playoff series against Valley View tonight. Each team has won a game at their home field in the best-of-three series. The series winner will move into semifinal round.

* The Hong Kong Ruby restaurant on Route 39 in the Beaufort Plaza will be moving to Patton Place, the new plaza being constructed on Route 39 just east of the Weis grocery store. - News tip by Harry.

Earth moving is progressing at the site of The Townes at Autumn View, a soon-to-be townhouse development located just east of Koons Park. CLICK HERE for background info on this project.

Linglestown shorts

* Senor Pepe's Tex-Mex restaurant appears to have gone south of the border based on its telephone being disconnected and a "for sale" planted in front of the property. This is the second eatery to bite the dust at the commercial property along Mountain Road near I-81. -News tip by Q.

* Ben's Bagel Bakery and Cafe is coming soon to Papa John's plaza on Linglestown Road. They have another location at 3840 Union Deposit Road. -News tip by Q.

* At his first meeting as a Central Dauphin School Board member, Christian Malesic got his term of office started with a bang when he suggested the district's policy on guns is too strict. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot, wouldn't you say? CLICK HERE for the story from The Patriot-News.

* Allison Weller, 13, of Linglestown, got a mention in Saturday's edition of The Patriot-News for being a Harry Potter fan.

* New Hope Church, 584 Colonial Club Drive, is sponsoring a Peach Festival on Saturday, August 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. CLICK HERE for details.

* Capital Area Soccer Association with 2,000 players is one big step closer to its goal of building a $2 million to $4 million complex for the sport east of the village of Linglestown. The tract of land targeted for the complex is located south of the paintball field entrance along Wenrich Street. CLICK HERE for a story by The Patriot-News.

Gonna dig some dirt

Heavy equipment is onsite near Warren Avenue chewing up topsoil and most likely spitting out tomato plants in preparation for construction of a condo community called The Townes at Autumn View.

The development is located near the eastern edge of Koons Park.

My summer break is over and new stuff will be posted as soon as I get unpacked.

Update: Linglestown square project

The engineering firm working on the square project is plugging away at obtaining right-of-ways from 100 property owners in the village.

As part of that effort, the Lower Paxton Township Board of Supervisors approved a request to use $135,600 of project funds for right-of-way acquisitions. Most of the money will go toward property appraisals, said township manager George Wolfe.

Property costs for the project are higher than expected due to regulations tied to using federal grant money, Wolfe said.

State transportation officials at PennDOT need to sign off on the funding request.

Wolfe commended PennDOT for helping to reduce property costs. Initially, the cost was estimated to be $300,000.

Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Lower Paxton Township news bits

Below are recent findings from The Patriot-News ...

* Update on alleged shoddy operations at the tax collection bureau that serves the township, Central Dauphin School District and other nearby municipalities.

* The Rev. Daniel J. Mahoney, 80, retired pastor of the Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Lower Paxton Township, dies.

* Lower Paxton Township Sewer Authority approves a $67 million plan to repair the sanitary sewerage system that serves neighborhoods west of the village of Linglestown. Sewer rates are predicted to double over the next 20 years.

Coffee tasting opportunity

Coffee master Geof Smith, owner of St. Thomas Roasters near the square in Linglestown, will host a coffee tasting event at The Linglestown Chocolate Cafe on Thursday, July 12 at 7 pm. The Chocolate Cafe is located directly across from the coffee shop on Linglestown Road near the village square.

For a $10 fee you will have the opportunity to taste several varieties of fresh roasted coffees made and sold by St. Thomas Roasters. Geof will introduce you to the subleties of coffee tasting, and you will receive a bag of one of your favorite varieties to take home.

Linglestown Baseball Association has crowned champions for its youth baseball leagues. Fall baseball sign-ups are scheduled on July 28, August 4 and August 11 from 9 to noon at Koons Park.

Linglestown square project on meeting agenda

The Lower Paxton Township supervisors will meet tonight at 7:30 pm at the municipal center, 425 Prince Street.

The agenda has a new business item about the township's agreement with Arora and Associates, P.C. for engineering and design services associated with the Linglestown Square Project.

Construction is tentatively planned to start this fall.

The meeting will be televised on Comcast cable channel 20.
